LESSON IV

To all of this you will respond:

I now understand things considerably more clearly. As a human being, whenever I want to seize something from life by force, I am inwardly convinced that the opposite of what I am striving for will appear. All that is unwanted in my life has been built solely by my erroneous attitude to life. I also know now that everything I wish for is my right and my decision, that my wishes represent the will of the primeval which realizes itself on its own if I do not hinder it with a wrong attitude to life. I have understood all of this. How should I now behave, in practical terms, so that henceforth everything will go smoothly?

In the first place, again bring clearly into your consciousness an awareness that everything that happens has been predetermined. All that happens evolves according to unchangeable eternal laws. Astronomers, for example, can calculate with mathematical precision the number of years before a star will again approach a certain location. From the seed of a particular fruit can grow only that same variety. A river in its course cannot flow higher than its source, and so on. Everything happens according to set laws which can never be broken.

Figuratively speaking: the primeval power which creates everything has determined a plan according to which it creates continuously and eternally.

Since man also belongs to this mighty plan of the primeval power's creativity, man's life is also determined in advance. Everything that happens to us today, tomorrow or at any time was already determined in the primeval beginning.

Upon reflecting you will say:

Considering the above, in actuality my every worry, my every willing to prevent and help, is senseless. If everything is determined in advance there is absolutely no sense in striving to change anything. Consequently my sickness, failure or misfortune have been determined in advance. I am not responsible for them, since there is absolutely nothing I can do about them. There is no alternative left to me but to allow fate a completely free hand, and from the start quietly acquiesce to everything that will happen -- after all, everything has been decided in advance.

If I have understood everything correctly, is it not the case that from now on my wishes will start fulfilling themselves on their own, in proportion to the extent to which I have understood the laws of predetermination and therefore have stopped fighting against fate?

Even though it may initially seem unusual to many -- this is exactly the way it is. Everything is determined in advance and everything constantly develops. We humans must also tread this developmental path.

But progressive development means an unceasing ascent to higher knowledge, to a more complete and better life.

But we cannot understand any mistake without having suffered because of it.

This is why people are sick, and experience lack of success and misfortunes. Every sickness, every failure -- anything whatsoever that is undesirable -- is always no more than a bridge to a new ascent, to a new insight.
